Don't waste your time - this documentary is just a glossy cover-up on a dirty record.

If you were expecting a series that would seriously and bravely expose the atrocities attributed to P. Diddy... think again. The Fall of P. Diddy feels more like a poorly rehearsed apology than a real investigative documentary. The script follows a tired and annoying pattern: justifying every abusive and violent action with the excuse of a rough childhood and some traumatic moments in life.

Instead of focusing on the victims and the severity of the accusations, the series is hell-bent on building an emotional narrative to make the audience feel sorry for the abuser. The sad background music, cherry-picked interviews, and dramatic close-ups are all just smoke and mirrors. Rather than confronting Diddy's actions with the seriousness they deserve, the series chooses to soften, excuse, and even redeem them.

It's yet another attempt to turn the path of a possible predator into a redemption arc. Sorry, but no. Other people's pain shouldn't be overshadowed by the story of the "poor guy who had it rough."


Verdict: Don't waste your time. If you're looking for something that truly investigates, questions, and brings justice to the surface - look elsewhere. This series is just another episode of "rich celebrity trying to clean up his image."

Mickey Barnes dies, then he dies again, then he dies again, over and over in ways that are both grotesque and banal. And that’s one of the more entertaining parts of “Mickey 17,” Bong Joon Ho’s frustratingly uneven follow-up to his Oscar-winning thriller “Parasite.”

With his third English-language feature, the South Korean auteur explores some of the same themes of the previous two, “Okja” and “Snowpiercer”: gaping economic disparities, humanity’s destruction of the planet and the dangers of authoritarianism. These topics are sadly more relevant than ever given the right-wing ideology that’s swept across the globe in recent years, and he depicts them with his signature high style and brash satire.

Still, for fans of 2019’s “Parasite,” “Mickey 17” may feel like a disappointment. Perhaps anything would be. Long gone is the exquisite mastery of tone and tension he displayed in his historic Best Picture winner. Writer-director Bong’s latest is more of a free-wheeling affair: heavy-handed in the points he’s making yet scattered in his narrative. At one point during a climactic swirl of visual effects, I wondered to myself: What exactly is happening, and how did we get here?


And yet Robert Pattinson’s performance is so gonzo, so gleefully deranged, that he keeps you hanging on and hoping he’ll succeed in a variety of incarnations. Starring in a Bong Joon Ho film is another example of the inspired choices Pattinson has made post-”Twilight,” whether he’s working with indie greats like Claire Denis, Robert Eggers and David Cronenberg or bringing his angular emo presence to Matt Reeves’ darkly artful “The Batman.” You can see why he’d be drawn to this role: It allows him to get a little goofy while showing a ton of range.

"Breaking Free from an Abusive Relationship"

While Companion takes viewers through the strange turns of a sci-fi dark comedy, at its core, the film explores deeply relatable themes. It follows a young woman as she comes to terms with the painful truth that her seemingly ideal boyfriend is anything but perfect.

Along the way, Companion reveals more about the supporting cast, especially in contrast to how Iris and Jack Quaid's Josh are around one another. This, in turn, sets the stage for the true meaning of Companion, which is reflective of abusive relationships and highlights the many ways people can be manipulated into unhealthy connections. The ending of Companion even casually sets the stage for potential sequels that explore Iris and her world, which could take the metaphor into a more wide-reaching perspective.

By the time Blade: Trinity was put into production, New Line Cinema – which owned the rights to the Blade character – was eager to monetise the franchise more effectively than it had before. The mid-Noughties were a no man’s land for Marvel properties, with Marvel Studios – which shepherded in the MCU – not yet in existence, and the likes of Spider-Man and the X-Men owned by separate studios. With no overarching, Feige-esque leader in control of the characters, it meant Marvel films were wildly disparate in quality and in tone. For every gloomy Ang Lee-directed Hulk was a sunny, PG-rated Fantastic Four. Blade, as played by Snipes, existed somewhere in the middle. His films were incredibly violent and gory, but also quite silly. (“Some motherf*****s are always trying to ice skate uphill,” Blade inexplicably jokes right before killing Dorff’s villain.) It’s partly why Blade and Blade II remain so popular today – in spirit and aesthetics, few pre-MCU Marvel films feel as in keeping with their comic book forebears.

Why, then, did a third Blade go so awry? By all accounts, there was trouble even before production began, with Snipes reportedly unhappy with the script (it involves the character fighting Dracula), and New Line’s choice of director (while it’s never been confirmed, this was likely German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel, who’d go on to make, um, the horrific Naomi Watts Princess Diana movie). That unhappiness led to New Line promoting to director David S Goyer, who’d written the scripts for all three films.

At the same time, New Line wanted the Blade movies to have spin-off potential, so requested the introduction of two new characters: vampire hunters Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler, the latter the estranged daughter of Blade’s mentor, played by Kris Kristofferson. Reynolds and Biel were cast in the roles, respectively. But the fact that Snipes is Black and the new buddies of Blade were not proved to be another issue. In her 2017 memoir, You’re on an Airplane, Posey wrote that Snipes felt he was “possibly losing control of the franchise to [his] younger (and whiter)” co-stars. The series was, at first, incredibly unique in this regard, a rare franchise of films from this era in American cinema – superhero or not – led by a Black man. It is noticeable, though, that they became increasingly white as they went on (a love interest played by Black actor N’Bushe Wright in the first film, for instance, was nowhere to be found in Blade II). By Blade: Trinity, its hero feels more like a co-lead rather than the film’s anchor.

Ajay Devgn’s dead-eyed performance barely registers, but the movie’s best character is its villain, a Lalu Prasad Yadav-like figure who has lost control over his brood. Saurabh Shukla’s superbly judged performance steers clear of the cliches associated with the venal heartland politician. His villainy and ability to stir up trouble are never in doubt, and when he protests that he has no idea what his family has been up to in his name, you almost feel for him.


Almost, but not quite – this movie’s moral compass is in the right place. Raid is clear on its rights and wrongs. Once upon a time in India, but not too long ago, it was conceivable that principled officers could do what they had signed up for, Gupta suggests. Political interference had already seeped in – the proof lies in Amey’s frequent job transfers – but it was still possible to thump the rulebook and hope to get somewhere.


As Amey says, I am an atheist who believes only in Bharat Mata, and I am now going to meet her.


Even Indira Gandhi seems touched by Amey’s crusade. In a laugh-out-loud moment, she praises his actions, scoring a not-so-subtle goal for detractors of the current regime.

Gupta’s allusions to present times are unmistakable. “No mob has ever been punished till now,” remarks a member of Rameshwar’s household as his constituents are recruited to discourage Amey’s efforts. The emphasis on punishing black money hoarders has resonance beyond the plot’s events, and the images of stapled packets of rupee notes and gold biscuits that tumble out of Rameshwar’s household create vivid metaphors for the insidious nature of corruption. Undeclared income is all around, and all it needs is a bit of digging, Raid says. That turns out to be its most enduring idea.

প্রারম্ভিক কথাঃ সাম্প্রতিক সময়ের অন্যতম আলোচিত সিনেমা হচ্ছে ‘প্রিয়তমা’। হিমেল আশরাফ পরিচালিত সিনেমার প্রধান চরিত্রে অভিনয় করেছেন দেশীয় চলচ্চিত্রের সবচেয়ে বড় তারকা শাকিব খান। চলতি বছরের ঈদুল ফিতরের পর ঘোষণা দিয়ে মাত্র দুই মাসে সিনেমার কাজ শেষ করেছেন হিমেল। শাকিব খানের মত তারকাকে নিয়ে এত অল্প সময়ে সিনেমার পরিকল্পনা নিঃসন্দেহে সাহসিকতার কাজ। এছাড়া সিনেমাটিতে শাকিব খানের লুক সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে আলোচনার ঝড় তুলেছিলো। গতানুগতিক ধারার বাইরে এরকম চরিত্রে শাকিব খানকে সচরাচর দেখা যায়না। শেষ পর্যন্ত কি সিনেমাটির মাধ্যমে দর্শকদের প্রত্যাশা পূরণ করতে পেরেছিলেন নির্মাতারা। ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার বিস্তারিত রিভিউতে সেটিই তুলে আনার চেষ্টা করবো।

কাহিনী সংক্ষেপঃ ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার গল্পের শুরুটা গতানুগতিক। তবে গতানুগতিক গল্পটা আসলে সিনেমার মূল প্রেক্ষাপটকে দাড় করানোর জন্য ছিলো। গল্পের শুরুতে দেখা যায়, ব্যবসায়িক অংশীদারের হাতে খুন সুজন (শিবা শানু) এবং তার ম্যানেজার। সুজনের ছোট ভাই সুমন (শাকিব খান) বাবার সাথে থাকে। সুমন এলাকায় পরিচিত মুখ, তবে সেটা তার ফ্যাশন এবং গুণ্ডামির কারনে। বড় ছেলে সুজন প্রতিষ্ঠিত ব্যবসায়ী হলেও ছোট ছেলে সুমনকে নিয়ে সব সময় চিন্তায় থাকেন তাদের বাবা কাজী হায়াত। সুজনের মৃত্যুর খবরে হার্ট অ্যাটাক করেন তার বাবা।


এদিকে বড় ভাইয়ের লাশ দেখেই সুমন বুঝতে পারে যে, সুজনের মৃত্যু আসলে কোন দুর্ঘটনা নয় বরং হত্যা। এদিকে স্বামীর মৃত্যুর পাশাপাশি শ্বশুরের অসুস্থতায় সুজনের ব্যবসায়িক অংশীদার ওসমান (শহীদুজ্জামান সেলিমও)-এর কাছে নিজেদের অংশের টাকা ফেরত চান সুজনের স্ত্রী। ওসমান টাকা একবারে দিতে অস্বীকার করে, তবে দুই একদিনের মধ্যে কিছু টাকা পাঠানোর অঙ্গীকার করে। কিন্তু পরবর্তিতে টাকা না দিয়ে এড়িয়ে যেতে থাকে ওসমান। উপায়ন্তর না পেয়ে, সুজনের স্ত্রী ওসমানের কাছ থেকে টাকা আনতে নিজেই চট্রগ্রাম যায়। সেখানে টাকা না দিয়ে ওসমান তার লোক দিয়ে সুজনের স্ত্রীকে মারধর করে ঢাকা ফেরত পাঠায়।


ওসমানের কাছে ভাবীর হেনস্তা হওয়ার খবরে তার সাথে দেখা করতে এবং ভাইয়ের টাকা ফেরত আনতে নিজেই সেখানে যায় সুমন। কিন্তু ওসমানের সাথে প্রথম দেখায়ই তার সাথে মারামারি করে সুমন। এরপর টাকা ফেরতের জন্য স্থানীয় পুলিশের দারস্ত হয় সে। কিন্তু সেখানকার পুলিশ কর্মকর্তা সুমনকে সরাসরি সাহায্য করতে পারবে না বলে জানায়। তবে সেই একালার সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান খালেক (লুৎফুর রহমান জর্জ)-এর সাথে কথা বলার পরামর্শ দেয়। পুলিশের কাছ থেকে খালেক চেয়ারম্যানের ঠিকানা নিয়ে তার সাথে দেখা করতে তার বাড়িতে যায় সুমন। সেখানেই সুমনের সাথে প্রথমবারের মত দেখা হয় ইতি’র (ইধিকা পাল)। ইধিকা পালের দুষ্টামির শিকার সুমন দুই দুই গিয়েও খালেক চেয়ারম্যানের সাথে দেখা করতে পারে না সুমন।

অবশেষে, খালেক চেয়ারম্যানের সাথে দেখা করে নিজের সব ঘটনার কথা খোলে বলতে সমর্থ হয় সুমন। খালেক চেয়ারম্যানের মধ্যস্থতায় ওসমান প্রথমবার ২০ লাখ এবং এরপর প্রতি মাসে ৩ লাখ করে সুমনকে টাকা ফেরত দিতে সম্মত হয়। যদিও, সমাধানটা সুমনের পছন্দ হয়না, এই মুহুর্তে টাকার প্রয়োজনের কথা বিবেচনা করে খালেক চেয়ারম্যানের বিচার মেনে নেয় সুমন। তবে টাকা দেয়ার ব্যাপারে একটি শর্ত জুড়ে দেয় ওসমান। ওসমান বলে যে, সুমন তার গাঁয়ে আঘাত করেছে তাই এই ২০ লাখ টাকা নিয়ে সুমন যাওয়ার পর যেনো আর কখনো এলাকায় না আসে। কথামত ওসমান পরেরদিন প্রথম কিস্তির ২০ লাখ টাকা সুমনকে বুঝিয়ে দেয়।

‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার মূল গল্প শুরু হয় এরপর। ওসমানের মত একজন হিংস্র মানুষের কাছ থেকে এত সহজে টাকা নিয়ে কি আসতে পারবে সুমন? তার গাঁয়ে আঘাতের কথাকি ওসমান ভুলে গেছে? সুমনের সাথে ইতির গল্পটা আসলে কখন এবং কিভাবে শুরু হয়? সবকিছু যদি এতটা সরল আর সহজ সমীকরণে এগিয়ে যায় তাহলে “ঈশ্বর কি তোমার আমার মিলন লিখতে পারতো না” গানের বাস্তবতা কি? সুমনের সাথে যদি ইতির মিলন নাই হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে তার পিছনে কার হাত ছিলো? চেয়ারম্যান খালেক কি আসলেই ভালো মানুষ? সুমন কি ওসমানের সাথে নিজের বোঝাপড়া না করেই চলে আসবে? সিনেমার পরের অংশে কয়েকটি টুইস্টের মাধ্যমে এই সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর সাজিয়েছেন নির্মাতা।

গল্প এবং চিত্রনাট্যঃ ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার গল্প এবং চিত্রনাট্য যৌথভাবে রচনা করেছেন ফারুক হোসেন এবং হিমেল আশরাফ। সাময়ের প্রেক্ষাপটে গল্প খুব একতা আহামরি নয় এটা সত্য। তবে আর দশটা প্রেমের গল্পও নয় ‘প্রিয়তমা’। একটি ট্র্যাজিক রোম্যান্টিক গল্প নিয়েই এগিয়ে গেছেন হিমেল আশরাফ। তবে গল্পের শেষভাগে দর্শকদের জন্য কিছু চমকও রেখেছেন লেখকরা। সেই সাথে উপস্থাপনায়ও ছিলো নতুনত্ব। শাকিবের লুকের পাশাপাশি প্রেমের গল্পের চেনা পথ ধরে দারুণ একটি চিত্রনাট্য নিয়ে এগিয়ে গেছেন ফারুক হোসেন এবং হিমেল আশরাফ। গল্পের দূর্বলতা অনেকটাই ঢেকে দিয়েছেন চিত্রনাট্য দিয়ে।

পরিচালনাঃ হিমেল সম্ভাবনাময়ী নির্মাতা। ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার মাধ্যমে নিজের সম্ভাবনার আরো একবার জানান দিয়েছেন তিনি। সেরা বা শ্রেষ্ঠ না হলেও, নিঃসন্দেহে তিনি সিনেমাটির নির্মানে মুন্সিয়ানা দেখাতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন। বিশেষ করে শাকিব খানের মত একজন তারকাকে এভাবে পর্দায় হাজির করতে চাওয়া এবং হাজির করতে পারাটা বেশ বড় অর্জন। কিছু কিছু ক্ষেত্রে হিমেল নির্মানের দিক থেকে আরো মনযোগী হতে পারতেন। বিশেষ করে শাকিব খানের প্রথম দৃশ্যটি আরো জাঁকজমক হওয়া দরকার ছিলো। তবে সিনেমার শেষ দৃশ্যে সেটি কিছুটা হলেও পুষিয়ে দিয়েছেন হিমেল আশরাফ।

অভিনয়ঃ শাকিব খান বরাবরের মতই সিনেমার মধ্যমনি এবং তিনি তার জায়গায় অতুলনীয়। ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমায় শাকিবের অভিনয় সম্ভবত তার দীর্ঘ ক্যারিয়ারের অন্যতম সেরা অভিনয়। গতানুগতিক ধারার বাইরে এসে নিজের অভিনয় দিয়ে দর্শকদের ধরে রাখতে সক্ষম ছিলেন শাকিব খান। অন্যদিকে ইধিকা পাল প্রথম সিনেমায়ই তার জাত চিনিয়ে দিয়েছেন। রীতিমত শাকিব খানের সাথে পাল্লা দিয়ে অভিনয় করেছেন ইধিকা। সহজ সরল এবং স্বাভাবিক অভিব্যাক্তির মাধ্যমে চরিত্রকে দারুণ ভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন তিনি। ভুলভাল ইংলিশের সংমিশ্রণে তার সংলাপগুলো দর্শকদের আনন্দ দিবে। রোম্যান্টিক এবং আবেগ – দুই ধরণের দৃশ্যেই অভিনয়ের ছাপ রেখে গেছেন ইধিকা।

শাকিব খান এবং ইধিকা ছাড়াও সিনেমাটিতে আরো একজনের অভিনয় দর্শকদের মনে দাগ কেটে যাবে। তিনি হচ্ছেন শহীদুজ্জামান সেলিম। ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার প্রধান খলচরিত্রে নিজের সেরাটা উজাড় করে দিয়েছেন শহীদুজ্জামান সেলিম। বাংলা চলচ্চিত্রের খলনায়কের চরিত্রে বিরক্তিরকর এক নাম মিশা সওদাগর। শহীদুজ্জামান সেলিম দেখিয়ে দিয়েছেন প্রথগত খলচরিত্রেও কতটা ভিন্নতা আনা সম্ভব। নিঃসন্দেহে মিশা সওদাগরের মত কুৎসিত অভিনয় থেকে দর্শকদের মুক্তির উপলক্ষ হতে পারেন তিনি। এছাড়া এলিনা শাম্মী, ডন, সীমান্ত, লুৎফুর রহমান জর্জ প্রমুখ নিজেদের চরিত্রে ভালো অভিনয় করেছেন। জর্জ তার নাম এবং চরিত্রের প্রতি সুবিচার করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন।

চিত্রগ্রহন এবং সম্পাদনাঃ চিত্রনাট্য এবং তারকাদের অভিনয়ের পর ‘প্রিয়তমা’ সিনেমার অন্যতম উল্লেখযোগ্য দিক হচ্ছে এর চিত্রগ্রহণ। সিনেমাটির প্রতিটি দৃশ্য বেশ দক্ষতার সাথে ক্যামেরাবন্ধী করা হয়েছে। বিশেষ করে শেষ দৃশ্যে শাকিব খানের অভিনয়ের সাথে এর চিত্রগ্রহণ ছিলো দারুণভাবে সাজানো। সম্পাদনার কাজটাও ভালোভাবেই করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন নির্মাতারা। যদিও, অনেকটা চেনা গল্পে সম্পাদকের কাজের পরিমাণটা তেমন বেশী নেই। তবে সিনেমার দ্বিতীয় ভাগে দর্শকদের জন্য যে চমক পরিকল্পনা করে রেখেছিলেন পরিচালক সেটি বেশ ভালোভাবেই করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন তারা।

উপসংহারঃ শাকিব খানের সিনেমার নিজস্ব একটি ভক্ত সমাজ রয়েছে, তাদের জন্য সিনেমায় শাকিব খানই যতেষ্ট। তবে ‘প্রিয়তমা’ যারা শাকিব ভক্তনা তাদেরও সিনেমা। শাকিব খানকে ব্যবহার করতে পারলে যে প্রেক্ষাগৃহে ঝড় তোলা কততা সহজ সেটিই দেখা গেছে এই সিনেমায়। বাংলা সিনেমাপ্রেমীদের জন্য ‘প্রিয়তমা’ একটি দারুণ উপলক্ষ্য। শাকিব খানের অভিনয় এবং হিমেল আশরাফের নির্দেশনা মিলিয়ে ‘প্রিয়তমা’ একটি সফল সিনেম্যাটিক অভিজ্ঞতা।
